Castello di Monreale

Description

The Castle of Monreale is located on top of a hill a few kilo meters from Sardara, in the center of the middle Campidano. It was built around the 12th-13th century AD. on the remains of an ancient Nuragic settlement. It is the only one in the whole of Sardinia to have, in addition to the restored keep, eight towers and all the walls over two meters thick and about a kilo meter long. It was a very important stronghold of the Giudicato of Arborea and was located on the border of the Giudicato of Cagliari. In addition to serving as a military stronghold, the castle was also a royal residence, frequented by the Arborense Court, whose members, including Eleonora d’Arborea, spent periods of rest and treatment there in the nearby thermal baths. Outside the walls of the castle, on the degraded hill towards Sardara, there was also a village around a church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, prince of the "Celestial Militia", to whom the soldiers of Arborea devotedly turned to benefit from his protection.
