Castello di San Michele

Description

The Castle of San Michele stands on the hill north of Cagliari, in a strategic position over the city, almost protecting the vast area that extends to the Gulf of Angels. And this is the first function that the castle had at the beginning. Built around the tenth century, at the turn of the Byzantine and the Giudicale period, the castle was located in front of Santa Igia, the capital of the Giudicato of Cagliari from the ninth century, later destroyed by the Pisans. The most important period of the Castle is undoubtedly between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, a period in which it was inhabited by the Carroz family, a noble Spanish family. Later, the castle became a place of welcome for the sick, during the plague that struck Cagliari in one thousand six hundred and fifty-six. The building has a square plan, as well as the three corner towers, and is surrounded by a moat and a curtain wall. A drawbridge allowed access to the castle. Looking at the west side, you can see two side entrances side by side: they are the remains of the church of San Michele on which the castle was built and from which it takes its name.
