Grotta della Madonnina

Description

The Grotta della Madonnina is a submerged cave that owes its name to an image depicting a Madonna with a child placed, by some fishermen to ask for protection from the dangers of the seas, on an opening above the cave. It is located under the extreme tip of the Capo Caccia promontory, twenty-eight kilo meters from Alghero, in north-western Sardinia. This evocative cavity, with a depth of eighteen meters and an opening of winds, is particularly interesting because it is covered with florid and luxuriant flora and fauna. In some places it has air bubbles and in the south-facing wall there is a tunnel that leads to a magnificent room where the stalks slip into a white sand dune.
