Isola di San Pietro

Description

The island of Carloforte is located in the south east of Sardinia. It is the second island, with about fifty square kilo meters of territorial extension, after Sant 'Antioco and together they form the Sulcis Archipelago. It is of volcanic origin, characterized by lovely sandy coves and high cliffs that overlook the sea from a height that can reach up to 150 meters. The only inhabited center is Carloforte, a characteristic and suggestive town founded in 1736, during the reign of Carlo Emanuele III, by a colony of Ligurian fishermen from Tabarka, a small Tunisian island, and in fact in Carloforte the origins of the Ligurian mixture tunisina are expressed and survive in the dialect, customs and construction style adopted in the country. This island has an interesting and intriguing history but also the natural and landscape beauties deserve special attention: only here does the Maritime Astragalus grow, whose image is used as a symbol of the Carlofortino tourist logo. The interior, mainly hilly, is covered by Mediterranean scrub which gives the island its own aromas of arbutus, juniper, mastic and helichrysum. This beautiful island can be visited on foot, with a trip by car or by boat and its depths are appreciated. by snorkelers and divers. Bird watching is also practiced as its coasts nest, among others, the Queen's Falcon (bird of prey in danger of extinction) and the Corsican Seagull. It is also possible to admire the colony of pink flamingos that have chosen the ponds of this extraordinary place as their habitat. The tuna that is fished in its waters and the slaughter which, annually, is repeated in the period between May and June are famous and prized. The Island of San Pietro can be reached by ferry, after forty minutes of navigation, starting from Portoscuso or Calasetta.
