Description

The Mura e Bastioni are part of the territory of Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, located in the southern part of the island. Cagliari has always been a crossroads of commercial activities and the scene of clashes due to its happy logistical position in the Mediterranean, and for this reason, impenetrable walls and imposing bastions were erected to defend itself from incursions. In an ancient map of the city, dating back to the sixteenth century, the number of towers that surrounded the city is clearly visible: the Torre dello Sperone (or of the Alberti) is the oldest and was built to defend the Stampace district, the Torre dell'Aquila was incorporated into Palazzo Boyl, the Elephant Tower and the Tower of San Pancrazio. The latter two outline the perimeter of the historic district of Castello and are the most representative of the ancient fortifications that offer suggestive panoramic views over the beautiful gulf of angels. Other bulwarks are the bastion of Saint-Remy, which was to protect the district of Villa nova, the bastion of San Carlo and the bastion of Santa Croce, now a place for romantic walks.
