Pozzo sacro di Santa Cristina
Description
This sacred well is an architectural masterpiece of the Nuragic civilization and is located in the province of Oristano, in the municipality of Paulilatino. It is an underground temple dating back to 3000 years ago, which due to the carving of the boulders, the perfect proportions and the excellent state of conservation could suggest that it is a recent and modern construction. It consists of three rooms: the vestibule, the stairwell and the underground chamber. It is thought that it could also be an astronomical observatory as its orientation matches perfectly with the alignment between the Earth and the Sun: during the equinoxes the Sun perfectly illuminates the pool at the bottom of the well.
