Area Archeologica di Matzanni

Description

The archaeological area of Matzanni is a complex of sacred buildings from the Nuragic and Punic ages located along the border between the municipalities of Iglesias and Vallermosa, in the province of southern Sardinia. The village includes three sacred wells and a series of circular huts. The first well still in good condition is located in the northern part of the area. Built with medium-sized blocks of local schist, consisting of a vestibule and a staircase, it leans to the south-west against a natural rock face of modest size. Access to the compartment is off-center with respect to the axis of the tholos. The second well is located at a distance of about fifty meters south of the previous one. This building also consists of a vestibule, a descending staircase and a "tholos" room. Of the third, located three hundred meters to the south-west, only the vestibule and the descending staircase are visible. In one of the wells, a small bronze statue with an oriental face (known as "Barbetta") was found which offered a bowl and a bread. The huts, not far from the three religious buildings, are mostly built in blocks of schist arranged in rows. The covering of the rooms consisted of poles and branches, as in the current "pinnettas" of the shepherds.
