Description

The spectacular Grotta di Santa Barbara is located inside the San Giovanni di Bindua Mine, a hamlet of Iglesias, in southern Sardinia. The cave was discovered in 1952 during the extension works of the mine. The cave dates back to five hundred thousand years ago and is entirely covered with white calcite crystals that have led to the formation of stalactites and stalagmites with columns up to twenty-five meters high, formed over the millennia. The site can be reached through an intricate, but evocative, system of underground tunnels that can be traveled via a small train which, through the tunnel located one hundred and fifty meters above sea level, after a path of about seven hundred linear meters from the entrance, leads to an elevator. that goes up along the well.
