Nostra Signora di Castro

Description

The Church of Nostra Signora di Castro stands on Monte Acuto and dominates the rural plain of the Coghinas river, in the municipality of Oschiri. Its name derives from the diocesan seat of Castro, suppressed in 1508, and it is a small Romanesque church entirely made of squared blocks of red trachyte which has a single nave and receives momentum from a small staircase of five steps whose purpose is to give it that memorable that the episcopal see needed. The façade is gabled, divided into three parts by pilasters and is surmounted by a bell gable. Inside, in the apse, there is a wooden data able between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth century. This former cathedral stands on the site of the ancient bishop's citadel and is closed by a fence with attached cells (the cumbessias) that once served as accommodation for travelers, and today are used for the most varied uses. The church is a pilgrimage destination every year and its image is shown on the coat of arms of the municipality of Oschiri.
