Nuraghe Fronte 'e Mola

Description

The Nuraghe Fronte 'e Mola (or Su Sauccu) is located in Mesu de Roccas, in the municipality of Thiesi, in north-western Sardinia. Fronte 'e Mola is a Protonuraghe, a stone construction dating back to the first half of the second millennium BC. which precedes the classic nuraghe in Sardinia. It is approximately 7,000 nuraghi surveyed, only about 300 belong to this typology. Also called; "corridor nuraghi", were built between 1700 and 1500 BC, and differ significantly from the classical nuraghi for their squat appearance and generally irregular plan and because they do not host the large circular chamber typical of the nuraghe, but one or more corridors, or in any case smaller rooms. The height normally did not exceed ten meters although the surface occupied by these buildings was on average considerably greater than those of the tower. The environment, more functional and perhaps more important than these buildings, was the terrace, which probably housed wooden roofs that served as living spaces. Little known until a few decades ago, they are at the center of studies and disputes among scholars who have begun to consider them fundamental for the understanding of the birth of the "nuragic phenomenon". There is still no unanimity on the name "corridor nuraghe" or "protonuraghe".
