Orto botanico

Description

The Botanical Garden of Cagliari, located in the historic center of the capital of Sardinia, in the Stampace district, covers an area of five hectares. Inaugurated in 1866 by Prof. P. Gennari, after various attempts dating back to the mid-eighteenth century, today it hosts about two thousand plant species, mostly native to the Mediterranean but also exotic and tropical species. The intentions of its founder was to establish a "garden model" where plants from countries with a climate significantly different from ours and despite the not very simple beginnings due to the lack of a constant water supply and scarce financial means grow luxuriantly. This beautiful green lung is divided into three sections, Mediterranean plants, succulents (succulents) and tropical plants for a total of about six hundred trees and five hundred and fifty shrubs. Of particular interest is the area occupied by the collection of palm trees in which an attempt was made to reproduce the habitat of an oasis. It also stands on an area of particular archaeological interest as it is possible to admire a Roman well, the cave of Gennari, a calidarium of the ancient Roman baths, three cisterns and a part of the Roman aqueduct that brought water from Villa massargia to Cagliari.
