Description

The Torre dell'Aquila, so called due to the presence of an eagle carved in the upper part, is located in the city of Cagliari, in southern Sardinia. It is part of the four Pisan Towers of Cagliari which undoubtedly represent the symbols of the city, emblems of the troubled past of these places. In fact, since 1217, the city of Cagliari was the territory in which the Pisans settled, who are concentrated in a particular way in the area where the Castello district is located today. The existing fortress was further fortified through the construction of high walls and four towers, which today are remembered as the Pisan Towers. They have an L-shaped plan, with an open side. They were made with blocks of stone limestone and from the height of their thirty meters they challenge the surrounding landscape with pride and grandeur. Inside, it is possible to admire four wooden loft structures, works that were added during the restoration work that involved the Pisan Towers during the nineteenth century. The original purpose of the Towers was obviously linked to military functions and served as lookout posts facing the sea. Starting from the period in which the Spanish domination took over, and until the late mid-nineteenth century, they were also the site of fearsome prisons complete with torture halls. The Torre dell’Aquila performed a control function of the southern area of the Castle. In 1708 due to the British, Spanish and French bombings, it suffered serious damage, losing the upper part. The ruins were partly adapted and incorporated into the nineteenth-century Palazzo Boyl.
